This exhibition showcased the dynamics between the world we’re making and living in, the weight of patriarchy against the thrive of equality as human being and the role of the artist to render, transform and transcend on his own pace everything mentioned above.

While the patriarchy stood up still in the center of the chapel in the sculpture “Clearance at the Men Store 2016”, refusing to wear the "C word" stiffed in an all black media installation; all the world is carefully split in two: Framed drawings from various sizes and years are resting on the floor and the lower part of the side walls forcing you to bow to discover a chaotic and disruptive gathering of images, objects peoples structures, human parts or apparatus frequently split to mirrored themselves; generating a world with hope and violence, fierce and sexual tension and bodily machinery for you to gaze in.

Passing by the world and the patriarchy and going on in the choir, lay bare on the floor at the right and left of the visitor, two autoportraits, “Autoportrait (NOT YOU) 2011” and “Autoportrait (I SAID PLEASE) 2017” (fig.2 & fig.3) forming a triangulation with the sculpture “My Heart The Beat 2004” made of three flickering electronics hearts which LEDs seem to skip a beat even though they have the same electrolytic capacitors (e.g. the same switching time) facing us in a quiet and clumsy dance. Inside of this triangulation lay a three part drawings of splatters with the allusive sentence “I love you so much” in the center. Again despair and faith are battling this time in the eyes of the artist’s itself.

During all the exhibition I did an actionist in-situ where I would sit in the middle of the chapel, my back to the choir facing the entrance, and stitching a tapestry mounted on a wooden frame floor stand (see video) from 11:00 am to 18:00 pm only stopping my work to meet visitors. This was temporary called “waiting with Penelope” and was primarily intended to show the long pace of my working and the attention to details surrounding me but eventually put myself in a meditative state. This doing I tried to charge the place with all my thoughts of creative mindset, waiting for something/someone new, something more fair, more loving, more just and unbiased.

BEAULIEU-SUR-MER: DE L’ART QUI REMUE

S’il est vrai que le but de l’art est de susciter une émotion, d’interroger l’âme, alors Alex Chaney est un grand artiste et la chapelle Sancta Maria de Olivo est le premier écrin offert à sa créativité. Car à 49 ans, c’est la première fois que le créateur d’ACP909 Studio expose seul.

Amoureux d’évidences, passez votre chemin. Ici point de paysage ou d’habile mélange de couleurs, l’artiste installé à Nice depuis 2017 après 30 ans passés à Paris et une résidence d’artiste à Dallas (Texas USA), va vous déranger. Il pioche des images, des formes dans la sphère immense de notre société de consommation, les copie, les décompose, les assemble, les transforme pour qu’elles se fassent vecteur de son cheminement artistique. Du noir, du blanc, une dualité homme/femme, car Alex Chaney est éminemment féministe. Ses œuvres dénoncent les dérives d’une société patriarcale marquée au fer rouge par la violence des hommes. Les femmes s’y débattent avec leurs propres armes, tentant de trouver un chemin sûr entre les Weinstein et les Trump.

Les œuvres sont plaquées au sol, blanches bulles d’espoir posées sur la noirceur des êtres, luttant dans « un maëlstrom de la vie ». Au centre, neuf jurés pendus à leurs convictions tentent d’assumer leur idée dégradante de la femme. Derrière, l’artiste tisse sa toile, attendant avec Pénélope le retour d’un homme juste. Mais la tâche est ardue et il s’abandonne à la pauvreté et au désespoir dans deux autoportraits avant de reprendre espoir. Le cœur se remet à battre, la vie est au bout du chemin.

De l’abandon d’un père, du manque d’amour d’une mère, Alex Chaney a fait une force créatrice. Il l’a partagée dix ans, exposant à Tokyo et Copenhague, avant de créer son propre studio en 2007. « Je suis artiste, je sais rien faire d’autre » nous dit-il. Son espoir : « qu’on soit tous féministes, qu’on croit dans l’égalité politique, culturelle et sociale des deux sexes. Qu’on ne soit pas en permanence dans un contrôle de certaines personnes ».

« Oh women Oh Men » est une exposition hors norme, dans laquelle il faut plonger libre de tout à priori, une étude sociologique à cœur perdu, que chacun doit se laisser libre d’interpréter à sa guise. Alex Chaney y travaillera à sa tapisserie et vous dévoilera ses œuvres prémonitoires, tous les jours de 11h à 18h, jusqu’au 10 septembre. Une rencontre à ne surtout pas manquer et à ressasser…
